Conquering Monsters

Friday, January 15th, 2010

limbaugh_1_web-largeThere are monsters among us. Monsters that run gravel through their hair but under feigned tears they smile at the destruction, the decimation of lives, the carnage-a feast. These men have nostrils that flare because above the smell of death they can sense opportunity, the opportunity to grab the warm blanket of attention, the life’s nectar of controversy.

These men, Pat Robertson, Rush Limbaugh dance on the bones of the dead for their own selfish enrichment with statements as non-sensical as they are mean spirited. Robertson, who fancies himself some sort of interpreter for God can not differentiate between what he views as God’s whispers and the full throated shouts of his internal insanity.

Limbaugh, on the other hand seems perfectly lucid. A man who proudly chortled that he hoped President Obama “fails” with no regard for the harm that would do to this nation he supposedly loves. A man who in the light of the human crisis in Haiti urged his numerous followers not to donate money due to the tax dollars already promised to the relief effort by a President trying to assist in the resurrection of a nation that this morning continues to try and identify potentially 100,000 dead, tries to heal thousands more, and re-build a world torn asunder by the blind rage of a trembling earth. For Limbaugh it is always political. For Limbaugh his role is always that of supreme rationer, Haitians have enough aid, Americans have enough Health Insurance. Easy proclamations from a golden throne.

These men are nothing more then troglodytic stains to whom humanity is a fawning fairytale, compassion a faint memory. That these monsters have the ear of millions, that they have influence over and even inspire fear in our elected officials tips this world closer to free range madness.

And yet there is light beyond the darkness. A chorus of feet marching towards the broken land of Haiti, arms open, helping men and women that they view as brothers, as sisters. Indeed we can see that light when hands are clasped in prayer for something beyond individual well being. We can see it when the nations, the people of this earth from points west and east, north and south are ready to help. Ready to recognize that the vein which unites us all cannot be severed by national borders-that it stretches over oceans and the chasm of our philosophical and spiritual disagreements. This gives one hope in the face of destruction, in the face of monsters.

A plea for Haiti

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

haitiearthquake2_1_medium2Politics aside let us all join in prayer, and embrace our will to hope for and help those affected by the recent earthquake in Haiti. Haiti is a small nation with 80% of its residents already living below the poverty line. Field reports have detailed nothing short of total destruction with many homes, schools, and hospitals demolished. Bodies are piled in the streets and those that have survived are in a race against time and circumstance to get medical care, water, and shelter.

Some have put the possible death toll at 100,000 with as many as 3 million Hatians affected. Through this all groups like the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders have been on the ground trying to help as many people as possible. Our Government has moved briskly to supply aide and the rest of the world has vowed similar support but as individuals we can target donations to groups that will help fuel the work that is taking place in the middle of hell, sewing a wound, quenching a thirst, saving a life. Below are links to such charities.
